Markdale Curling’s History

Curling has deep roots in Markdale, with the Markdale Curling Club officially founded in 1922. This was made possible by the generosity of Thomas H. Reburn, who donated property along what is now Highway 10.

The original facility included a rink, a club room, and a cozy waiting room with a glass partition, allowing spectators to watch the games while staying warm.

Initially, curling in Markdale was a sport reserved exclusively for men. However, in January 1945, the club took a significant step forward by opening its doors to women, hosting the first-ever Ladies Night, which became a turning point in the club’s inclusivity.

In 1954, the introduction of artificial ice revolutionized the game in Markdale, allowing for a longer and more reliable curling season, regardless of the weather.

Our current home, built in 1964, provided the club with a modern curling facility, lounge, kitchen and licenced bar.

Today, the Markdale Golf & Curling Club operates as a not-for-profit organization that is run by a dedicated Board of Directors. We rely heavily on the hard work and commitment of volunteers from the community to keep the club running.
